E. Nesbit (1858-1924) wrote many books for children including The Railway Children and Five Chidrenand It. She had a talent for combining very true-to-life stories about children with an element of mystery and fantasy. Nesbit also wrote books for adults, including collections of horror and mystery stories.
As a child, Nesbit lived in France and Germany, returning to England at the age of 17. In 1880, she married Hubert Bland and had five children. Hubert died in 1914 and three years later, Nesbit married a ship’s engineer, Thomas Tucker. When she died of lung cancer in 1924, Tucker carved her wooden gravestone in the churchyard of St Mary in the Marsh.
