Charles Dickens, 4ESO

 Dear students,

Charles Dickens is the author of our 1st Classic Ghost Story. So, let ´s see a little bit about his life:

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was one of England’s most famous and prolific authors. He wrote novels, plays and short stories. Among his best-known novels are Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and A Christmas Carol.

Dickens came from a large, poor family. When his father got into debt and went to prison, 12-year-old. Charles had to leave school and work under terrible conditions to help his family. Many of his stories contain social criticism based on his own difficult experiences. As a young man, Dickens started work as an office boy for a newspaper. He very quickly became a reporter for two large London newspapers, and it was at this time that he began to write. Some of his stories were published in serial form in papers

and magazines. His ghost story The Signal-Man first appeared in 1866 in a Christmas collection of the periodical All Year Round that he founded.

Dickens married and had a large family. He died of a stroke and was buried in Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey.

Jobshadowing English as a Foreing Language lessons at Lycée Jules Verne - Erasmus + KA 101

Dear friends,

Our English teachers are coming back form their job shadowing experience in France. They were observing English lessons at the Lycée and were discovering about their way of developing their Upper Secondary School system.

Their schedule there was the following one:

Monday 18th AprilArrival at Paris airport.

   Tuesday 19th April:

Arrival at Lycée Jules Verne at 9:00. The French coordinator prepared a guided tour of the school and talked about the school system there.
Then, the teachers job shadowed a very interesting class in the English contemporary world with the teacher Ophelie Baillière. In it, students discovered USA and UK university system by means of a Who wants to be a millionaire? quiz and then, a reading comprehension activity in groups. At 12: 00 they had lunch in the school canteen.
Later, they went back to lessons, this time to an amazing literature lesson about Jane Eyre with the Terminal students (2n bach equivalent). They reflected on the book, anaysing some chapters and answering questions about them. Then, a few students practiced their presentation for a final oral test in the English language taking place in June.
Finally, our teachers had the oppotunity to interview the person in charge of "the school life", Frédéric Vaiani, a very lively man, full of strength to cope with the current issues that affect
teens´ life at school.

Wednesday 20th April:

It was a very sunny day to discover and enjoy some of the most interesting English Foreign Language bookshops in Paris.

We would like to highlight the Shakespeare and Company bookshop. Amazing bookshop! We bought a Shakespeare book for the school library!

Thursday 21st April:

Arrival at Lycée Jules Verne at 9:00. The teachers attended Laurance Altibelli Year 13 EFL lesson. Students were developing a listening activity about  how Britain is dealing with its identity crisis. In it, students listening to the audio three times had to summarize the main ideas in their own language, French. Then, they had to say them individually in front of the class, so the teacher could evaluate their speaking and their capacity of synthesis.
After this lesson, our teachers attended a Year 12 (1st Bach) students literature lesson, led by Sophie Laubier. It was a very interesting lesson about the comparison between the book Of mice and men, written by Steinbeck and the movie. Students took an active role in the class and were commenting the previous homework activity as they were film critics.
Finally in the morning, the last lesson was with Laurence Altibelli again but this time with year 11 students, the youngest at school. In this EFL lesson students were watching a video about the Super Bowl and had to create a mind map on their notebooks or tablets and then, present a summary of the video main ideas in front of the class again. Here, the teacher was evaluated their speaking skills, whose goal is to get the B1 level in English.

In the afternoon the teachers carried out a Treasure Hunt around the city of Limours to explore their town center and touristic attractions by means of an app called Action bound.
It was very entertaining and curious.

How to get to Limours by Bus or RER?
